Emergency Life Kits : Pediatric & Neonatal Treatment
Being prepared is everything.
One of the major causes of unnecessary deaths in Cambodia is from pregnancy and childbirth complications. While Cambodia has been steadily reducing pregnancy-related deaths, 160+ women are still dying per 100,000 live births - the maternal death rate remains higher than the regional average. Midwives most commonly report obstetrical bleeding and eclampsia:- WAH have tailored focus to the most common emergency scenarios that midwives face in rural clinics, where there are no on-site doctors to help.
Since 2013, WAH has collaborated with KKH and Mount Alvernia (2017) for emergency training in a range of procedures. With the success of the Train-the-Trainer program, WAH has 20 CORE trainers, and more than 300 nurses are now prepared for emergent issues. And with guidance and support from our medical partners at KKH, these kits are designed to be highly practical and appropriate for emergency resuscitation in local rural settings (see list attached for easy reference). Standard placement of equipment within the box will facilitate simpler monitoring of use and replenishment when needed on a regular basis. We can bundle the equipment and label it. Eg: put all items required for thermo-regulation in a zip lock bag and label it on top of the bag for easy visualisation. These emergency kits can be used at the healthcare centres, plus portable for transfers out in the field (e.g. river ambulance, and land ambulance if required). The main aim of the kit is to be used during an emergency. Consumables in the kit are required items during an emergency.
Introduction of Medical Kits.
Since 2017, WAH Foundation has provided an emergency medical supplies service for medical health clinics in Kampong Chhnang Province, Cambodia. The Good Exchange has been actively raising funds for the kits. Supported by the Provincial Health Department, KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital & Mount Alvernia Singapore, WAH emergency kits are designed to save young Mother & infants in isolated rural communities during childbirth. In an emergency we can take out the bundles required and thereafter replenish items used. Inclusion of medications will depend on what is allowed by the Health Department, and requires regular checks (e.g. expiry date), proper storage and disposal.
